She’s trying to save the boy’s life. What if he’s supposed to save hers?

For tough-as-nails Chicago social worker Ashley Sorenson, it’s nothing new to risk her life for hurting children. Seeing innocent kids suffer every day may have made her a little cynical, but she’ll stop at nothing to rescue children from miserable circumstances.

But Ashley faces a special challenge when Matthew Borden, a sixteen-year-old with Down syndrome, is orphaned. Finding a suitable foster home for the boy becomes the least of her problems when someone starts threatening her and Matthew.

The sudden appearance of a mysterious FBI agent confirms Ashley’s growing suspicions that Matthew is no ordinary teen. The boy she thought no one wanted is wanted by many…dead or alive.

Dodging danger at every turn, Ashley races to find the secrets that could save Matthew’s life. When the truth unearths her own dark past and threatens more than their lives, the God Matthew trusts may be her only hope for rescue.

A gripping and gritty standalone Christian suspense thriller from the bestselling author of the Guardians Unleashed Series.

DEVOTEDTOHOPE'S REVIEW OF SPECIAL TARGET

I couldn’t put this down … not because it was easy to read, but because it wasn’t. Every chapter pressed deeper: emotion, tension, questions that refused to stay quiet and moments that made me stop and think, how could she believe that? … and I needed to keep going to see where it would all land… both within the pages and within me.

There is a weight carried through this story that does not stay contained within the pages. It presses outward. It confronts. It asks direct questions about what is believed, what has been accepted, and what is being held onto without ever being brought before God.

The female lead challenged me. In a way that stayed close. Her perspective, her reasoning, the way she viewed life and the value of it or not … it created constant friction. There were moments I felt the weight of that … moments where it stirred frustration, heartbreak, and grief. And yet … there was something deeper.

A heart that chose to protect.

A life she once believed should not have been given a chance … now entrusted to her care.

That matters.

“She sighed … ‘One day, Jesus saw a man who had been born blind …’” That moment triggered. It does not resolve itself quickly. It does not attempt to reshape God into something easier to accept. It places truth where it belongs … and allows it to stand. What is believed about God: His authority, His purpose, His right to form life as He wills is brought straight forward without adjustment.

Every life is given by Him. Given.

I was fully inside these pages … smiling, laughing, feeling anger rise, crying, sobbing, and at times just sitting with the weight of what had been placed in front of me. This story did not leave me untouched. It sharpened my awareness of how easily people can be measured through broken human reasoning instead of truth… and it left me wanting to see life more clearly, more humbly, and more in light of what God says matters.

Jerusha Agen writes with a steadiness that allows both the suspense and the deeper truths to carry full weight. Nothing feels rushed. Nothing feels forced. What unfolds does so with intention … and it holds. Boy does it hold!

This story draws the reader in and asks them to stay … to look closely … to consider what they believe … and to remain there long enough for truth to do its work. Close the book … and live what it reveals …. where every life is seen according to God’s purpose, not man’s measure and valued as God has declared, not as man decides.
