Imagine grieving your spouse for six years. Six years of believing they are gone. Then you answer the phone and hear their voice.

I cannot even imagine.

Robin Patchen took that almost unbearable premise and made me feel the weight of everything Ethan and Mei Lin had lost. I hurt for them. I wanted those years back for them. I wanted healing for the places six years of grief, fear, separation, and survival had changed. And through all of that emotion, tension, suspense, and ache … God is there.

Prayer carries weight in Shadowing You. Trusting God becomes part of how these characters endure fear, uncertainty, and loss. They turn to Him when they are afraid, when they need wisdom, when someone they love is beyond their ability to protect, and when they have no idea what comes next. Their faith is lived where faith is hardest, because believing God does not make fear disappear or pain become easy. Forgiveness demands more than words … it requires full surrender and obedience to Jesus. Trust still has to be rebuilt. They keep returning to the One who can hold what they cannot.

I loved that.

Robin Patchen writes emotion, mystery, and suspense beautifully. She gives grief and love room on the page, and she lets six lost years remain six lost years. There were moments between Ethan and Mei Lin that hurt simply because of everything missed, everything endured, and everything they could never get back.

Ethan’s story with the Wright family carried that same ache in a much different way. He had spent so much of his life shaped by what was missing, by rejection, and by what he believed about the people who should have been his family. Watching those old places begin to open again felt tender and painful because healing could not erase the history.

Then this story made me look beyond Ethan and Mei Lin.

We can trust God through a crisis and still quietly decide that some losses are permanent. We can believe He is faithful and still assume certain relationships are too broken, certain prayers have gone unanswered too long, or certain parts of our lives are simply gone … too far gone.

That thought hit me hard. Because God had been working through all of it. Through days that looked empty, years that felt lost, broken relationships, old wounds, unanswered questions, and places Ethan and Mei Lin had already decided were closed forever.

Shadowing You pushes against that resignation. Our Almighty God alone is able to bring healing, peace, belonging, and restoration.

Ethan and Mei Lin had spent years living under the shadow of what was lost. Shadowing You reminded me that no shadow is deep or dark enough to hide us from God and His faithfulness.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
